چکیده

The management of transport infrastructures has undergone major reforms in recent decades, including privatization, de-bureaucratization, and regulation. One important but often neglected issue in the management of large transport facilities is the joint governance of ports and airports, a phenomenon that is relatively frequent in the US but not in either Europe or Asia. To examine the factors explaining the joint management of ports and airports we undertake a multivariate empirical analysis in a sample of US metropolitan areas. We find that joint management of these infrastructures is more likely in the smallest and largest cities, and less likely in medium-sized cities. It is also more likely in areas with ports and airports of similar magnitude, because there is room for exploiting scope economies. Finally, we find that joint management is less likely when there is large-scale involvement of private firms in port activities, as in the landlord model. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Coupling Geomechanics and Transport in Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

Large amounts of hydrocarbon reserves are trapped in naturally fractured reservoirs which arechallenging in terms of accurate recovery prediction because of their joint fabric complexity andlithological heterogeneity. Canada, for example, has over 400 billion barrels of crude oil in fracturedcarbonates in Alberta, most of this being bitumen of viscosity greater than 106 cP in the GrosmontFormat...

Modelling of Sediment Transport in Beris Fishery Port

In this paper, the large amount of sedimentation and the resultant shoreline advancements at the breakwaters of Beris Fishery Port are studied. A series of numerical modeling of waves, sediment transport, and shoreline changes were conducted to predict the complicated equilibrium shoreline. The outputs show that the nearshore directions of wave components are not perpendicular to the coast whic...

The role of Computational Intelligence in Integrated Traffic and Air Quality Management – Feasibility Results

A common way of dealing with large urban transport infrastructures is by using Urban Traffic Management and Control (UTMC) systems [1][2]. The UK Department for Transport led Urban Traffic Management and Control initiative recognizes the following common UTMC components: strategic network management, comprehensive performance monitoring, traveller information, congestion monitoring, streamlined...

The Ramsey numbers of large trees versus wheels

For two given graphs G1 and G2, the Ramseynumber R(G1,G2) is the smallest integer n such that for anygraph G of order n, either $G$ contains G1 or the complementof G contains G2. Let Tn denote a tree of order n andWm a wheel of order m+1. To the best of our knowledge, only R(Tn,Wm) with small wheels are known. In this paper, we show that R(Tn,Wm)=3n-2 for odd m with n>756m^{10}.
